Quiet mufflers?

by Buy_Sell <werkspace@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Jul 21, 2007 at 01:41 PM

Since its so quiet around here and nobody seems to have anything to
talk about, I've got a question about hovercraft mufflers. I realize
that a considerable amount of noise comes from the props/fans but if
you were trying to design your own muffler, what method would you
choose?

I've got no muffler or catalytic converter on my F350 turbodiesel and
it doesn't seem to make any more noise than when all of this
restrictive stuff was attached. It appears that the turbocharger eats
most of the noise. BTW - the reason for removing these parts was to
improve fuel economy which it appears to have done.

I recently purchased a book on how to make the ultimate 10/22 ruger
and it has a section in it pertaining to silencers. The author's
research leads him to believe that rolled up wire mesh, similar to
window screen, seems to make the best silencer. So, here are two
ideas that might be applicable to making the ultimate hovercraft
muffler.

Then, there was the 'amazing muffler' which I saw in a science
magazine several years ago. This muffler design divided the airflow
into two pathways around a vee, into another chamber which had an
opposite facing vee with an exit hole in the middle of the vee. The
claim was that each chamber would reduce the sound by 70%. The
reflected sounds in each chamber would cancel each other out. I've
noticed a similar effect when target shooting at the local gravel
pits. I am constantly amazed at how a high powered shock wave can be
almost completely cancelled by standing in the right spot.

So, for all of you quiet guys out there, let's hear your thoughts on
making things more quiet...
