I'm new to this so please forgive me, but I would really like to know how
to differentiate a boat suitable for long ocean voyages (probably not
really a cir***navigation, but long in any case) from a boat that is not
suitable for such trips.  

I would like to buy a boat sometime in the next few years and I would
prefer to buy one that I can grow into instead of one that I grow out of. 
Any information to help me in this quest would be greatly appreciated.
