Well guys.
After many years of simply cruising and having the odd fun race in the
RL28,
I have decided to get back into full on racing.
A couple of weeks ago I started the motions going to have a brand new
purpose built race boat built and yesterday took delivery of it.
It is an Orca design IOM Class and am looking forward to putting it
through
its first test run this Sunday.
Incidentally IOM Class stands for International One Metre Class.
YES, it is a Radio Control Yacht!!!!
What? You think I would be that stupid to poor millions of my hard earned
dollars (which I don't have) into a full size race yacht!!!!
I might look and dress like a dummy but I aint that stupid!!!
Anyway, back to the boat. I used to race Marblehead's for years but with
all
the new high tech gear and composite materials these days, a competitive
Marblehead class yacht will cost you anywhere from $14,000 upwards, so our
local club opted to change over and race the new IOM class which does not
allow a lot of the expensive composite materials of the Marblehead's, and
there fore keeping the cost down.
This also firmly puts the emphasis back on the ability to sail the boat
rather than how much you have spent on it.
And even better still (and this is the bit I really like) you can go down
and compete in up to 10 gruelling races in one day, and not have to go
home
and suffer the pain of it all for the following week!!!
Also, if you have gear breakage you don't need to make an appointment with
the bank manager or the insurance *****sor to get it fixed!!
They are really good fun and, after an absence of a couple of years, I am
really looking forward to getting back into it.
best regards
Garry
