How to signal for help from a boat? - A Rant.

by Mike Romain <romainm@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Jul 13, 2008 at 04:57 PM

OK, I think 'I' know or thought I 'knew' how to signal for help from a
boat, you open up the emergency kit you are supposed to have in Canadian
boats and blow on the whistle in blasts of 3 while waving your arms right?

Apparently that is Wrong.....

I was out in the deep Canadian Bush, about 25 miles from the nearest
phone coverage, near Bancroft Ontario, camping with my wife during
opening weekend for Bass fi****ng and witnessed something both disgusting
and scary, a young woman out in a boat alone close to the other side of
the lake blowing '3 blast' shots on her whistle, while waving her arms
and 'everyone' ignored her.

There were 4 or 5 other boats on the lake closer than me on the shore
that 'had' to have also heard the whistle shots and seen her. One, the
closest to her actually started up their engine and Moved Away from her!!!

I went to her campsite and told her 'husband' that I think his wife is
in trouble because she is blowing and waving and his comment was 'well
what does she want me to do, swim out there?' This is despite a 2 track
trail going very close to where she was and him having an ATV sitting
right there.

Thankfully it wasn't a life threatening situation, it turns out she was
'just' really stuck on a rock and too scared or better said lacked the
confidence in her ability to try and swim the boat off it. The motor
wouldn't do it. She finally rocked the boat off the rock and then
caught **** for damaging the bottom of the boat....

The other boats on the lake were from local Hunt camps, not campers. It
would seem to make a difference or something about helping?

In my opinion that is totally disgusting and Just Plain Wrong.

OK, now I feel better, Rant mode off....

Mike
