I haven't got a canoe and can here looking for guidance so my input is
from 
an none users view.

I don't know about devices but I do know you can get roof bars with
rollers 
it that helps. Though it sounds like assistance with the loading would be 
the best course of action. Failing that how about securing poles to the
ends 
of the roofrack which you could use to slide / guide the canoe up?
