1. Place the kayak on the ground in front of the car.
2. Tie one end of a long peice of rope to the handle on the far end of
the kayak.
3. Lead the rope through the handle on the near end of the kayak, over
the roof of the car, around something fixed behind the car, and tie it
to the back of the car.
4. Start the engine and slowly drive forward. The kayak will be pulled
onto the roof of the car.
Note: if it's a new car and you want to protect the finish throw an
old blanket over the hood and roof.
Don't laugh. It might work.
If you post the query at rec.boats.paddle you might get more
suggestions but they will probably be for commercial products.
I've pulled back muscles a couple of times. Painful, but they heal in
about a week.
I'm surprized anyone can paddle a kayak with a back pain.
