****table VHF from someone IN the water won't carry very far at all, no
more 
than 5 miles.  Best it'll do is let you talk to the helicopter flying 
nearby.  That may be useful, to be sure, but only if they found your area
to 
begin with, or you're in an area with other boaters nearby.  I'd certainly

want one in a ditch bag but I wouldn't expect miracles from it were I on 
open ocean.
