You first problem is that you are painting aluminum and it is a bit
difficult to get paint to stick to aluminum.
If you can still use a two part etching primer I'd use that. Sand the
dings and scratches and immediately prime them. If the etching primer
is unavailable can you use Zinc Chromate primer? If so then do the
same thing, sand and prime.
If both of these are unavailable I have seen a red primer that looks
like red lead, but isn't, and stated on the label to be good for
aluminum, unfortunately I've forgotten the maker. :-(
Once you get it primed you can use a single part enamel over the
primer. Most two part paints will react with the primers mentioned and
cause a mess. If you must use a two part paint do a test piece first.
A two part epoxy paint usually chalks fairly quickly; a two part poly
paint is usually hard to apply by hand and the super ****ny two part
poly paints like awlgrip really need to be sprayed, else they look
like hell.
Frankly, if you just have bright scars on the mast and no corrosion
then almost anything will get you through the summer. .
