I bought a 2nd-hand Evinrude Junior (2 hp) outboardb motor, circa
1988. The motor is generally in good order except that the top 1/2" of
the splines at the top end of the driveshaft are stripped above their
half-way point. In other words, if the splines are 1" long, the top
1/2" are stripped off.
The engine was running OK at first. Then I dismantled the leg of the
motor for routine maintenance and I notoced the stripped splines as
soon as I removed the shaft. Strangely enough, they had not actually
given any noticeable problem until after I reassembled and ran the
motor... It was only then that the splines started failing to stay
engaged.
I have not tried to investigate the state of the splines inside the
crankshaft which are supposed to engage with those on the drive shaft.
Since a new drive shaft and crankshaft are hard to obtain, I'm
wondering if anyone could suggest a way to jerry-rig it. I was
thinking of perhaps gluing the drive shaft into the crankshaft with
epoxy, or perhaps cutting the knackered top 1/2" off the crankshaft
and then welding a 1/2" extension into the shaft, further down...
Any suggestions?
Thank you,
AL Deveron
