However, I use a Garmin GPS76 which is not a chart plotter but does have
the
marine nav lights and buoys built in worldwide. As this is more than 
adequate
for coastal sailing when combined with a paper chart, I guess it would do 
for dinghy sailing too.

For powerboating, when a chart is nigh on useless at speed due to the wind

and spray, I have
scanned parts of my charts and laminated them. This is possibly a breach
of 
copyright but it's for my own use only
and essential as far as I'm concerned. The only problem is to ensure the 
chartlet contains enough of the lateral
and vertical scales and a compass rose to aid accurate navigation!
