My thinking exactly. A chart displayed on a handheld can't be much
larger than a postage stamp. But when I went shopping for a Garmin 76
the other day, I found I could buy a Garmin GPSmap 76 for fewer
dollars ($143 at Amazon) and it will do everything a mapless 76 will
do. Since then, I've found the Basemap page not completely useless for
a quick looksee but I still depend on a paper chart, as per usual, for
detail.
